Laptops are designed to be slim and easy to carry but while they perform very delicate tasks, they are made for rugged use too. They are not workstations which remain static on the home or office desk. They can be transported at will to any place we choose to take it. Hence they should be able to stand the stress and strain of movement and the capacity to withstand shock of any kind. Weighing about 1.3 to 2.6 kg, these notebooks look small but are very hardy.
The rugged type generally have an inbuilt well protected battery circuitry that works smoothly even when there is fluctuation while charging and overheating in the process. Keyboards seem to be designed in a way to resist any kind of spills. The touch pad and buttons are also resistant to the same. There is an optical disk tray lock that ensures that it stays in place even when there is an impact of a fall of any kind. The LCD screen and the hard disk drive are similarly protected from any kind of harm or loss of data. The outer case is generally made of magnesium alloy and this is deemed stronger than the ABS plastic. The HDD cables are flexible as well as hardy and can withstand the shock of any kind of drop.
The average run time of any laptop PC is about 6 hours after which it needs to be charged. The screen size is about 14 inches and can support the ubiquitous Microsoft Windows XP and has a microphone for audio input and a sound card for the output. With 60GB and a RAM capacity of 512MB it works admirably for any kind of use. There are others with 80GB also. The specifications can be studied before choosing the most suitable notebook.
It is very important to check both the warranty period, which should be at least two years, and the service offered. The warranty period ensures that if there is any problem in the system it can be rectified at the service centre free of charge, within the stipulated time mentioned in the warranty card. In the absence of such a facility the consumer has to pay from his own pocket for a problem which has occurred in a new system. All the above criteria should be fulfilled if one is looking for ‘hard working’ laptop!
